Vassup? No doubt you will utter Brunos catchphrase at least once. Bruno; another character from Sacha Baron Cohen, finally hits the big screen.
Bruno is a gay, fashion and tv icon who falls from his perch high atop the Austrian celeb ladder. He sets off to become world famous and sets up base in L.A. From there he jets around the place attempting to reach his goal, of super stardom. In between jetting around, he also adopts a baby in Africa. And that is basically the story of Bruno. What am I saying, there is no real story here, just sketch after sketch glued together with the lame quest for fame idea.
That said, some of the segments are absolutely hilarious and completely over the top. The sex scenes in particular will have your popcorn exiting from your nose, as will the talk show scene. Some are better than others, and its quite obvious which ones are legit and which ones are adlibbed. Each sketch or set piece if you like, will have you wondering will he get killed or badly injured. In particular the middle eastern and deep south sketches.
Inevitably people will compare this to Borat and its quite similar to be honest, except Borat was a likeable character with a charming innocence and Bruno is just an arrogant arse although on at least one occasion you do feel for him. And Borat didn’t feel like an extended version of the trailer.
Sacha Baron Cohen has proven he has an extremely large set of testicles for what he does, but scene after scene of swinging dicks and dildos and a velcro suit do not make for an amazingly funny movie. Bruno is funny, but it has been done before in Borat, and done far better. There seems to be an obvious, deliberate attempt to offend and gross out in Bruno, while the same was done in Borat, it wasn’t half as obvious. Borat was more natural, while Bruno comes across as strained and forced at times.
All of that said, Bruno will make you laugh, no questions asked but you will quickly tire of the jokes and just wonder what will he do next. At the end of the movie though, it is very obvious given the cameo’s, that Sacha Baron Cohen has well and truly arrived. As I said you will laugh, but make sure you leave your brain AND morals at the door. People walked out and cast scowling looks in my direction as they left the cinema, so if you are anyway easily offended this is best avoided.
