Woody Allen has been going through somewhat of a boost in popularity over recent years. After he moved to London for Match Point and found a new muse in Scarlett Johansson, interest seemed to be renewed in his work and recent films like Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona have seen moderate success in the box office (more than usual for Allen anyway). With the new cast for his next film after this year's Midnight In Paris, that streak is sure to continue.
Variety's @theinsneider is reporting that Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page and Penelope Cruz have all signed up for the film, which as usual has a plot kept tightly under wraps. No word on what genre Allen will be tackling this time, but if he's going for comedy he's certainly got a fine roster. Baldwin, as anyone who watches 30 Rock will know, is naturally funny and probably underrated as an actor despite his fame, so it's great to see him signing up for more work even though he has threatened retirement numerous times. Cruz, too, proved to be one of the highlights of Vicki Cristina Barcelona so it's good to see her back with Allen again. No sign of Johansson though...could he be on the hunt for another muse? He's often suggested working with Diane Keaton again, here's hoping that happens some day soon. I doubt he'll be calling Mia Farrow though.
The film is scripted by Allen himself, and not wishing to waste any time will hit cinemas in 2012. In the meantime, Midnight In Paris (featuring Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Michael Sheen among others) premieres in Cannes before a summer release.
