20 FOR 20…11

SHARE:

2011 is shaping up to be a pretty decent year movie wise and I originally thought I was being quite clever doing an 11 for 11. But after trudging through release dates there is a rather good selection of stuff coming out, so welcome to the 20 for 20…11. I’m not spending hours banging on about each individual movie, but these are a few flicks I’m really looking forward to seeing and fingers crossed they’ll all hit the mark. There’s no long meandering shite here, just a quick piece and the most important part (where possible as I still don’t have a damn DeLorean), the trailer!!
1 - 127 HOURS – 5TH JANUARY
People have fainted watching James Franco hack off his arm in the true story of Aron Ralston, directed by Danny Boyle. The trailer alone should get Franco an Oscar nom!

2 - TRUE GRIT – 14TH JANUARY
The Coen Brothers + Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon in the old West. What more do you want. And the word from the States is epic!

3 - PAUL – 18TH FEBRUARY
I’m not the biggest Simon Pegg fan in the world, but he does what he does quite well. As does Nick Frost. Who once again are back together as super geeks, on a road trip where they find an alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) who they help to get back home. The latest trailer looks quite promising and Pegg is wearing an ESB shirt and that’s enough for me.

4 - THE BEAVER – FEB 11TH
Mel Gibson has been surrounded by the media for all the wrong reasons over the last few years. Personally, I couldn’t care less what’s “reported”. Gibson has always been a fine actor and this looks to be him at his very, very best. I wonder will “politics” get in the way of some awards! Check out Martin Riggs been absolutely, mind-blowingly awesome!

5 - RANGO - 4TH MARCH
The first full animated feature from Industrial Light and Magic look’s brilliant! Check the water, check the water.Basically, the little lizard who could! Voiced by Johnny Depp, Rango has been bubbling away for nearly the last year now and seems to be firing on all cylinders.

6 - BATTLE: LOS ANGELES - 25 MARCH
Yet another alien invasion movie, and this time L.A. is one of the last places standing. Starring Aaron Eckhart, B:LA unlike more recent alien flicks, looks to be quite moody and full of human annihilation, and that’s just what we need! A bit of realism! But then again, I after being subjected to Skyline, I await this one with a little apprehension.

7 - SUCKER PUNCH 1ST APRIL
It’s Zach Snyder, hot chicks and fire breathing dragons and shit! The whole thing looks absolutely bonkers and is probably more stylised than anything, but who cares!

8 - SOURCE CODE – APRIL 22ND
Can Duncan Jones repeat the amazingness that he created with Moon! Personally, I think he can! Check the trailer NOW!!!
9 - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN ON STRANGER TIDES – MAY 18TH
Has Jack Sparrow found his feet again? After a disastrous third outing, Cap’n Jack (Hey ho!) is back and considering he’s not playing second fiddle to Legolas and so on, this could well be the greatest pirates movie ever.
10 - THE HANGOVER PART 2 – 27TH MAY
The first one was huge and the second one will be huge by default! Either way, there is no denying the power that Todd Phillips weilds with his returning cast! Still though, it’s a tragedy that there is no Mel Gibson! As long as the Clinton cameo has cigars, we’ll all be happy!

11 - X-MEN: FIRST CLASS – 2ND JUNE
Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman are teaming up again as they take on the X-Men. Vaughan done a terrific job on Kick-Ass so I’m hugely looking forward to seeing what he will do with X-Men. This one is going way back, to a time where Xavier and Lensherr were just young men, and more importantly before they were enemies as Prof. X and Magneto Methinks Vaughan will do for X-Men as Aronofsky will do for Wolverine!

12 - YOUR HIGHNESS – 24 JUNE
For the last 2 years now we’ve had 2 stand out comedies. Namely The Hangover and more recently Get Him To The Greek. While Your Highness is set in another time altogether, it’s got all the right ingredients to cause huge amounts of choking on popcorn. And it’s got Danny McBride doing a spot on English accent, James Franco proving yet again he’s comedy gold and..Natalie Portman’s arse!

13 - TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON – 29TH JUNE
The first one was good, the second one was just pure shite and many including LeBluff, believe they have to get this one right as Michael Bay brings an end to the Transformers trilogy. It’s here because I have faith. I’ll probably be wrong, but when the people who have blown millions of $ and agree they need to do better, then that gives a little bit of hope!
14 - COWBOYS&ALIENS – 12TH AUGUST
I’m not saying anything other than the following…Favreau, Ford, Craig! FTW! This could well be one of the movies of the year!
15 - SUPER 8 – 19TH AUGUST
Much like Cloverfield before it, Super-8 arrives amidst a tonne of viral activity and intrigue. And being a sucker for such things, I can’t wait for this one!
16 - REAL STEEL – 7TH OCTOBER
And while this may be the weakest of the bunch here, and will more than likely be shite, you can’t help but get excited at a few robots knocking metallic quarter pounders outta one another….oh hang on…Transformers 2….ok, it’s got Wolverine in it….hmmmm……
17 - THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN – 26TH OCTOBER
Possibly the biggest movie of the year! With the the heavyweight of cinema attached, Steven Spielberg, Tin Tin will either go amazingly brilliant or just get stuck in the toilet like a big poo! I’m non too familiar with the whole Tin Tin character, but if anyone can make this work….Voiced by Jamie Bell, Tin Tin, also stars the likes of Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis! We await a teaser trailer with baited breath….and to see what Spielberg will do with 3D.

18 - HUGO CABRET – 9TH DECEMBER
Hit Girl teaming up with Martin Scorsese in a 3D movie…for a younger audience. Long classed as a master, it will be fascinating to see what Scorsese does with 3D and indeed how a book about a child, a robot and a train station translates! This is going to be one of the biggies for Xmas 2011!

19 - SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 – 16TH DECEMBER
The band are back together after a hugely successful original. And the original, even with it’s flaws, caught me by surprise and was thoroughly enjoyable. As long as Guy Ritchie keeps the same mind-set as the original, ie it ain’t broke so lets not fix it, this could well repeat it’s success!

20 - MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL – 16TH DECEMBER
December is shaping up to be a pretty epic month and the Cruise machine is back swinging off the world’s tallest building in another Mission Impossible movie. The fourth if your counting. Knight & Day had moments of the old Cruise machine doing what he does best and I reckons this could well see him return to full form!

So there you have it! Sure I’ve left out stuff like Thor and what not, but the above 20 are some of the flicks that I reckon will certainly be worth a watch, and am personally looking forward to planking my ass on a seat and watching! Anything YOU are looking forward to in 2011?
