Since I’ve discovered 30 Rock many moons ago, I’m always inclined to gawk at something starring Alec Baldwin. And you can’t complain about Meryl Streep. Christ, I even liked Mama Mia.
Its Complicated isn’t entirely too complicated to get your head round. Jane (Streep) has an ex husband called Jake (Baldwin). While Jane is still single and a little lonely, surrounding herself with a few of the girls, Jake has really moved on. He is married to a much younger woman with a son, and spends his days emptying himself into a cup in a fertility clinic.During their son’s graduation, Jane and Jake have a few drinks, dinner and then some more drinks. Ultimately this leads to Jake climbing on top of Jane and doing only what wild animals do…I think. Enter the architect, Adam, played by Steve Martin. Adam is designing an extension for Jane and subtly gets besotted with her. Jake, after getting the leg over the first time, continues to get the leg over time and time again and the two of them start slowly realising that their divorce was probably a bad idea. Combine this with Adam making a few moves and the who will she end up with scenario, and you have a very non complicated movie.
While all 3 stars get equal billing the poster for It’s Complicated, Steve Martin is relegated to playing fourth fiddle, as his part isn’t all that big. His performance on the other hand, well there’s nothing wrong with it really. But at times it seems that Steve Martin is trying very hard at doing an impression of himself being somewhat serious. Baldwin is like his 30 Rock character. Suave and sophisticated but a little but of a bumbling fool too. Meryl Streep dials in a solid performance, but you can’t help but feel we’ve seen this Streep like performance a million times before.
It’s Complicated is obviously not geared at a younger audience. Granted there’s a hilarious crotch joke when Jake and Jane get it together the first time but for the rest of the movie, the tone is somewhat serious and intellectual. The laughs, while there are some, are quite high brow at the same time. Its Complicated is a solid film, but it neither peaks nor dips in any aspect. It plods along to its rather “nice” conclusion, methodically. It’s Complicated reminded me of The Breakup (with Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughan) in its tone and context. Intelligent and witty at times and quite a step above your average romcom. There’s not a great deal wrong with It’s Complicated, it is what it is. If your in the Alec Baldwin / Meryl Streep age bracket, then here’s a nice sweet movie for you. If your not in that bracket, well….there’s always 30 Rock….or Mama Mia!
