Paramount Pictures Ireland announce animated short film will screen over the next week before new releases Ondine and Case 39
Dublin March 4th 2010  Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, the Irish Oscar nominated short film, will screen at over 50 cinemas across the country over the next week with new releases  4 times IFTA winner Ondine and Case 39.  Produced by Irish company Brown Bag Films, the short film tells the story of a seemingly sweet old lady who terrifies her little granddaughter at bedtime with her dark version of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. Granny O’Grimm is directed by Nicky Phelan and written by Kathleen O’Rourke, and has already won 11 national and international awards.  The film is one of five Oscar nominees in the category Best Short Film (Animated) – the winners will be announced on Sunday March 7th in LA.

Paramount Pictures Ireland is the distributor of both Ondine and Case 39 in the Republic of Ireland.  Ondine, the enchanting new Neil Jordan film starring Colin Farrell, recently opened the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival to great acclaim.  Farrell, in a role written specifically for him by Jordan, plays a simple fisherman, who one day, trawling off the Irish coast, catches a mysterious and beautiful woman in his nets.  Case 39 is a chilling drama starring Renee Zellweger, who plays a social worker fighting to save a girl from abusive parents, only to discover the situation is more dangerous than she expected.  Both films open across the country from tomorrow, Friday March 5th – Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty will screen with both films from various dates throughout the week.

Niamh McCaul, General Manager of Paramount Pictures Ireland commented “We’re delighted have the opportunity to provide the cinemagoing public an opportunity to see this terrific Irish short film from next week onwards.  We wish the filmmakers all the best at the Oscars this Sunday.  Paramount Pictures Ireland is very keen to support local filmmaking in any way we can.  Giving Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty a wider audience will, we hope, be beneficial to the Irish film industry while entertaining film lovers across the country.”

Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty received funding from the Irish Film Board, RTE and The Arts Council of Ireland, and is being distributed nationally by Paramount Pictures Ireland.  Other nominees in the category of Best Short Film (Animated) at this years Oscars include household names such as Pixar Animation and Aardman Animation.  The nomination for Granny O’Grimm marks the second Oscar nomination in 8 years for Brown Bag Films, who were previously honoured for the massively successful Give Up Yer Aul Sins in 2002

Great news for a really wonderful short!
