The LA Times have been speaking to James Cameron about Avatar, it’s influences, it’s cinema rerelease and the sequel. It will be rereleased in August, with an additional 6 minutes of footage and Jim and co reckon there still is plenty of life in the Na’Vi when they go back to cinemas as the 3D prints were forced out of 3D screens when Alice in Wonderland arrived.
On the sequel front, this is what James Cameron had to say!
“We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”
Which in one way is not too surprising. given that Jim is a diving nut and loves the ocean! I remember reading (for the life of me can’t remember) that there was so much of Pandora created, trees, jungles and so on that it be a shame to let it go to waste and it would all be reused in the sequel. Now with the movie going underwater for a lot of it, it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.
Cameron also goes on to say that he’d like to make the sequel to Avatar in half the time and at half the price, but will settle for a 25% reduction!
