As a child who grew up on the likes of Star Wars and Superman, you’d think I would have never been a fan of something like Clash of the Titans, which originally appeared in 1981. But I was. I still can’t put a finger on it, but the whole thing was incredibly charming. I do recall the special effects by Ray Harryhausen, and even back then, stop motion wasn’t exactly cutting edge. It was an older technology that was pioneered many, many years previous.I wanted realistic spaceships and motion control. But none the less, I found the work of Harryhausen charming and I was always glued to the screen.
But time moves on, and part of me was looking forward to the Louis Leterrier remake. Not a huge part, but there was a part of me that was a little bit curious, in particular about all the set pieces and how the evolution of special effects would bring the past right into the present. And yes, curiosity did kill the pussy cat.
Perseus (Sam Worthington) is the son of Zeus (Liam Neeson) and lives on earth as a human and goes on a journey to stop the evil underworld and it’s head honcho Hades (Ralph Fiennes) blowing up the earth or killing a few badgers with the Kraken or something. And of course the infamous words “Release the Kraken” are uttered by Liam Neeson in the final chapter and throw in the head of Medusa and you get a movie that is just about watchable. And I really mean just about.
There’s not a great deal wrong with it when you break it down bit by bit. The cast aren’t bad. Worthington is adequate, Ralph Fiennes is great as Hades and Liam Neeson is sporting the worst hair-do and beard-do in the history of hair and beard-do’s. Even the set pieces are solid. Pegasus is superb. The Kraken is superb, even though short lived. Medusa look’s great, The Scorpion scene is brilliant and the action flows very well. But the dialogue lets it down and the the movie chugs along at a snail’s pace, and excluding the action set piece’s, it doesn’t flow very well at all.
And the biggest problem with the whole thing, 3D. It doesn’t work in any capacity. COTT was shot in 2D and converted into 3D and it shows. The 3D is so bad, it’s actually distracting. There’s no sense of depth, immersion or god forbid, even a few gimmicks where you would be required to duck and dodge. If you are going to see this, save a few quid and don’t fork out for the 3D version! This might be a better movie in 2D and I’ll give it another spin when it arrives on Blu-Ray later this year.
The original movie, is what it is, nothing amazing or anything so it shouldn’t have been too hard to better it, but alas no joy on that. Clash of the Titans 3D is a gimmick without a gimmick and will leave you feeling a little stone faced, but with no Medusa stare in sight!
