And whilst it’s getting lost a bit in the mayhem that is the Back To The Future 25 year shindigs, The Goonies are also pushing that milestone. The entire cast got together for a press junket for the 25th Anniversary DVD and Blu-Ray release and have addressed talks of a sequel. Jonathan Ke Quan (Data) says he thinks it will never happen and Corey Feldman says "Five years ago there was a magnificent script... but we're all getting too old," and original director Richard Donner says "It felt like everything we were doing would hurt the original," Donner goes onto say that a musical is going to happen “There's a great writer / producer called Tim Long who does musicals on The Simpsons* which are classic. He just delivered a treatment of The Goonies as a musical, and it's friggin' great!"
While many of us would love a sequel, I think credit where it’s due to Richard Donner who doesn’t want to milk the thing for all it’s worth. But with the current crop of remakes and sequels from movies that are quite old, it doesn’t mean that a studio can’t do a sequel. Although, let’s hope that, while they will never die, The Goonies are left rest in peace!
