The Halo movie at one time was a go. Peter Jackson was involved as was Neill Blomkamp who was set to direct it. But it all fell through and Jackson produced District 9 instead, which was directed by Blomkamp. Over at Vulture in NYMAG Dreamworks are wanting to revive the project. Why? Who knows? As video games have never been turned into good or even average movies? More than likely it’s something to do with the fact that Halo:Reach has made northwards of $200 million on it’s first day of release. Or maybe I’m just being shallow!
A bloke called Stuart Beattie was given the task of coming up a script for a Halo movie back in the day and said “I’m just a huge fan and my long-term goal is to get three Halo movies [based on the three novelizations] made. It’s not something I can accomplish tomorrow. But if I can help, I am glad to do it."
I’m still not sold on the fact that video game adaps, no matter how big the franchise (billions in Halo’s case) make good movies. And even if they did make good movies, will they make good money. I wonder is there too much reliance on the gaming / geek demographic actually dragging themselves away from the mouse or joypad and going to a cinema to part with their hard earned cash? There’s plenty of proof that says they won’t! And here are 2 examples.
Kick-Ass, as brilliant as it is, only made $96 million world wide. Yes, it made a profit, but the sequel was only confirmed when the DVD/Blu-Ray sales went through the roof. Scott Pilgrim was another example. A brilliant flick from Edgar Wright but only made $43 million worldwide. Pilgrim is on home release this November and I reckon it will do huge business! Why? The same reason Kick-Ass did huge business on home release. Geeks and Gamers for the best part like their own comfort zone and don’t like mingling with the lesser creatures!
