People may have, over the last while, heard the RED Camera system bandied about. Briefly, without spilling my geek goo all over the place, the RED Camera system is a rather small, robust all singing and dancing digital camera system. For example, the RED ONE camera shoots digitally at 4K resolution (which is pretty high). The likes of District 9 and The Social Network were mainly shot using the RED ONE camera. Well, Peter Jackson is back using RED for The Hobbit. The director previously shot his short (!) (CROSSING THE LINE) using the system and for The Hobbit it will be shot on RED EPICS. Ok, here it comes….The RED EPIC shoots at 5K resolution (your eyes will explode) and 120 frames a second…so…SPLAT…sorry.
Jackson who has grabbed 30 to shoot with says “I have always liked the look of Red footage. I'm not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats. I find the picture quality appealing and attractive, and with the Epic, Jim and his team have gone even further. It is a fantastic tool, the Epic not only has cutting edge technology, incredible resolution and visual quality, but it is also a very practical tool for film makers. Many competing digital systems require the cameras to be tethered to large cumbersome VTR machines. The Epic gives us back the ability to be totally cable free, even when working in stereo."
The Hobbit should, if above all else, look amazing!!! Geek goo screech!
