It's a tradition shared by just about everyone that owns a TV. You know the one, every year stuffed full of food, suffering from meat sweats, you plonk yourself in front of the telly to watch a few movies. This year, we at The Movie Bit have decided to make it easier for you. Sifting through the usual crap, we've gone ahead and picked out the best flicks on air this Christmas. Take a look below for the only TV Movie Guide you'll need this year!
CHRISTMAS EVE:
AVATAR - SKY PREMIERE - 8PM
Avatar is a sure fire way to get some peace and quiet throughout the house. It's a beautiful film, with just enough for everyone to enjoy. As it's about the most popular film of all time, I don't think I need to go through the plot, so I'll just say it's a very good film, with a nice bit of fluff - perfect for Christmas Eve.
RATATOUILLE - RTE 2 - 6:30PM
This, along with Wall.E and Up, is one of my favourite animated films of the last decade. Again, there's something in it for everyone in the family and it's airing just around the time you'll be finished gobbling up Xmas dinner. Perfect opportunity to get some R&R before desert!
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS - SKY ACTION - 11:30PM
I cannot recommend this film enough. If you haven't seen it, take the time to check it out now. It's one of my all time favourite films and it does not disappoint. That said, this film is not for the faint hearted, so beware. Make sure the kids are fast asleep!
CHRISTMAS DAY:
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE - TV3 - 1:20PM
Widely regarded as the best Christmas film of all time; It's A Wonderful Life really is the ultimate festive flick. It's a wonderfully uplifting movie with the always excellent James Stewart. As classic a film as you can get for the season!
THE SECRET OF KELLS - RTE 1 - 1:40PM
An Irish animated film, nominated for an Oscar, starring Brendan Gleeson and the legendary Mick Lally. The most striking thing about the film is the quality of the animation. It's really quite incredible. Maybe give this homegrown kids film a look instead of the usual this year? It's worth it.
THE DEPARTED - RTE 2 - 9:40PM
The best modern gangster tale around; starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. Excellent performances and a twist that'll knock you on your arse. If you've yet to see it, this is a solid one for the adults this Christmas.
ST. STEPHEN'S DAY
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK - RTE 1 - 1:25PM
One of the greatest movies ever! Watch it! That is all.
UP IN THE AIR - SKY PREMIERE - 10:45PM
A fantastic romantic drama starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga. This is one that'll make you appreciate being at home with the family rather than stuck at the Airport! Strong recommendation for this.
MICHAEL COLLINS - RTE 1 - 11:50PM
A stunning biopic of a true Cork legend. For all you night owls, RTE's annual showing of Michael Collins is not to be missed. Just a great film, through and through.
So there you have it folks. You absolutely cannot go wrong with those 9 flicks this year. There's something there for everyone, so enjoy! And a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from The Movie Bit!!!
