Kevin Smith was set to have an auction for Red State after it screened last night at Sundance. That “auction” happened and Smith walked away with his own movie for a whopping $20. So Silent Bob will distribute Red State himself and as per usual had a Q&A after the screening in which he explained that he didn’t see much point in spending nearly 4 times the cost of the movie ($4 Mill) on advertising and marketing.
Red State will be released on October 19th (in the States at least) and yes, that date might be familiar for the Clerks and Kevin Smith fans as it’s the movies 17th anniversary. Until that date, Kevin Smith will hit the road and go on tour with the movie, where projections estimate that he will pull in $1.5 million+.

And you can request in a screening as well by clicking here. And yes, I’ve shot an email to Kev requesting one for Ireland! There’s a mixed reaction to what's gone down at Sundance, but personally, like I always do, I’ll wait for the movie to arrive before I make my own judgment on it. As for the “Kevin Smith buys distribution to his own movie”, it’s certainly something nobody saw coming. More power to the guy, who claims his next movie, Hit Somebody, will be his final film. It may pave the way for future film makers in a big way!
