UPDATE: Wow. I have never seen such an incredibly fast switch in a film's production. It's now been confirmed (bitterly I might add) by the maestro himself, that the project is in fact dead in the water. Apparently Universal are just too uneasy with the idea of such a risky project, despite loving the idea. As the article states, Deadline has done the math and At The Mountains Of Madness would have to make in excess of $500 million dollars just to break even. It seems having Don Murphy, Guillermo Del Toro, James Cameron and Tom Cruise all attached to a film means nothing these days. Damn shame...
Guillermo Del Toro is a busy man. Jumping from one project to the next, or signing on should I say, it's always been a wonder as to what project he'll actually end up doing next. And now that it's been recently confirmed that the director has chosen H.P. Lovecraft's horror novella, At The Mountains Of Madness, it seems the production is already gearing up. Collider has just posted a super-brief interview with producer Don Murphy, where he announces that none other than Tom Cruise has just locked in for the lead role. I must admit, I figured Universal wouldn't go for a 2+ hour, big budget, R-Rated horror epic, but after this, I guess it makes sense. Del Toro can utilize Cruise's stardom to garner interest from the general audience, rather than just horror junkies.
