Or not. I don't think anybody is surprised that Terence "One Film A Decade" Malick's latest opus, Tree of Life, got the big prize at the Cannes Film Festival. After being hyped up for an eternity and praised/derided in equal measure, the jury decided that it was indeed worthy of the Golden Palm, after quite an eventful Cannes. Will it win big at the Oscars? Who knows. The reviews don't exactly describe an Oscaresque movie, but it's no surprise that it won big in France.
Obviously, Lars Von Trier was nowhere to be seen but Kirsten Dunst did win Best Actress for her role in Melancholia, leading many to start talking about Oscar. A bit premature, I think, especially when we have Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher this year....
Nicholas Winding-Refn, director of mob-driver movie Drive, won best director, after the movie went down a storm. I'd like to think it was because Christina Hendricks was in it.
