...in a big way! Not content with being an astronaut on two occasions already, Tom Hanks and his company Playtone are preparing a megabudget adaptation of the 1960's action figure, Major Matt Mason. Total Film say that the toy, an astronaut based on the moon, was involved in outlandish sci-fi adventures galore so it's not hard to see why it looks like a tantalising prospect for the studio. Hanks himself is set to take on the title role, in what would be his first proper sci-fi movie, and a potential tentpole movie for Playtone.
At the moment, he's courting Robert Zemeckis to direct the 3D movie but that is tentative at the moment - since Zemeckis' motion-capture studio closed doors he's had loads of offers to choose from. They both worked together on the terrifying Polar Express, Cast Away and Forest Gump. Are you intrigued? As a certain Alec Baldwin said, Tom Hanks is one of the few actors who has built up enough creative and commercial credibility to make any movie he does one to look out for. I'd be very inclined to agree.
