With Captain America: The First Avenger out soon and set in WW2, and The Avengers out next year and set in present day, it’s been a bit of a mystery as to how a sequel proper to Captain America would pan out – would they have an entirely new cast in modern day?
Well, one of the writers Stephen McFeely spoke to Screen Junkies and mentioned a few things with regards that very issue:
Well, our hope is that there is room and we’re negotiating how to do that now. The story will likely be in the present day. We’re experimenting with flashback elements for more period World War II stuff. I can’t say much more than that but we made it baggy enough to refer to more stories in the past.
Predictably that doesn’t give away much but I think the main hint is that yes, it will be present day which isn’t a huge surprise. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how they do it in the context of the Avengers. Probably more significant is that he said they’ve made a deal with Marvel, indicating that they’re going ahead and working on a sequel. That doesn’t mean it’ll happen – a sequel to Green Lantern is allegedly written but possibly up in the air due to missing box office goals – but it’s promising nonetheless. A new trailer for Captain America is due out very soon ahead of the July release.
