Or should I say “extended scene” from 2012’s Battleship, because this trailer looks more like the first 30 minutes of the movie distilled into a trailer format. And yes, it is indeed an adaptation of the toy license that we all know and love, and no doubt the producers are hoping for Transformers-style success with this Peter Berg movie. What can the trailer tell us?
*Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and Alexander Saarsgarrd lead a cast of naval folk that also includes Rihanna on her first movie outing. Not that you can tell from the trailer – surely advertising Rihanna is a no-brainer?
*Unlike the game, battleships aren’t fighting each other, they’re fighting a whopper of an alien spaceship. There’s no denying it looks slick, but also very similar to Battle LA and Skyline in some ways. No shots of the aliens yet!
*Not only is there a blatant shot taken from above to reinforce the game connection, but the aliens actually shoot ACTUAL PEGS at the Battleships!! Actual PEGS! Pretty amazing/ridiculous.
*The jury is still out for me, judging by this footage. Peter Berg’s last film was Hancock, which was awful, and lots of things (like the pegs) about this suggest it might be a bit too B-Movie to compete in the crazy 2012 schedule. Time will tell….Battleship opens May 18.
