Green Lantern was, for many fans, a colossal disappointment and undoubtedly didn’t turn out how Warner Bros planned. Notice how Man of Steel has been delayed and all talk of a 2013 Justice League movie has evaporated? Could be that they’ve suddenly become a bit more careful after Green Lantern’s ‘soft opening’ of 50 million. As of writing, it has yet to recover the megabudget but word is, a sequel is on the way. And it’s not rumour either – Warner Bros president Jeff Rubinov told the LA Times himself that the sequel will be ‘edgier and darker’.
WHAT A SURPRISE.
When in doubt – go dark. I’m sure many will look to the Dark Knight as the proof that dark = success, but that character and story was inherently dark anyway, so is it wise to do it with the more comic-book styles of Green Lantern? I’m not sure. Slashfilm has some good news though, saying that even though he’s optioned for a sequel Warner Bros want to replace Martin Campbell. I recall him saying himself he didn’t want it, so perhaps a sequel could remedy all the mistakes of the first…..perhaps.
