Unless you’re part of the “Smurfs on a Stick” brigade and weren’t a fan of the groundbreaking, incredible and beautiful Avatar, chances are when you saw the lush planet of Pandora you thought it would make a pretty sweet place to visit. Well, looks like Disney thought the same, with the news that they are planning a big, expansive Avatar-Land at Walt Disney World.
Of course, it won’t be called that. But in their report the LA Times say that Disney plan to integrate Avatar attractions into their parks, with a ‘whole experience around Avatar’ in the pipeline. They compare it to the crazily successful Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal, something Disney are no doubt hugely jealous of.
Personally, I think it’s a fantastic move – the possibilities for rides (Ikrans!) and attractions (Pandora tours) are huge, and it’s not like Disney will cut costs on attractions based on the biggest movie of all time. Whilst Avatar isn’t a Disney franchise, word is that James Cameron will be heavily involved which is even more encouraging.
It’s very interesting news from Disney, who had been rumoured to be building a TRON attraction post-Tron:Legacy. Things seem to have gone a bit quiet there after the moderate box office, but you never know. Avatar though, that is what you call a ‘safe bet’. And an exciting one. It’s obviously MANY YEARS away, so in the meantime you can look forward to Avatar 2 in 2014, or watch the extended 56 hour version on blu-ray.
