Recently the internet was abuzz with the word that Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk would be taking on the sequel to Marvel’s first big hit of 2011, Thor. However, it seems he’s no longer circling the project with the word now that Patty Jenkins, who directed Aileen Wuornos biopic Monster, is up for the job.
Entertainment Weekly report that talks are ‘ongoing’ to get Jenkins to take the helm on the sequel, which is set for a 2013 release. She actually hasn’t directed a movie since Monster, but has been heavily involved in directing tv, most recently the pilot for the American version of The Killing – which impressed a lot of people.
EW also mention how Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige said the sequel will ‘literally’ take Thor to other worlds, suggesting then that the movie will explore some of the ‘Nine Realms’ mentioned in the first film. We’ve already seen Asgard, Midgard (Earth) and home of the Frost Giants, Jotunheim. He also hinted at a continued focus on the Thor/Jane relationship and his relationship with Odin, too.
What do you think about these developments? Personally, my favourite bits of Thor (which I loved) were the Earth scenes, but I understand completely that you can only play the ‘fish out of water’ schtick for so long before it gets boring or lazy. How, also, do you think The Avengers will impact on this story arc? I find it hard to believe we won’t see Jane in The Avengers……..
Jenkins could very well be an interesting choice – nobody expected Kenneth Branagh for the first one and he did a great job, so it’s important to keep that in mind! Expect to see ‘Thor 2’ in July 2013, with all the main cast returning, but as Kat Dennings points out, with Marvel the actors aren’t always in the know about sequels.
