No, Mr. Zemeckis isn’t hopping on a plane and escaping Hollywood forever after the reception to his motion-capture movies. He’s actually returning to live action with pilot drama, Flight, which is now well into the casting process.
Denzel Washington takes the lead as a pilot who likes to chill out with a few pints whilst flying, and ends up saving a plane from a crash landing. However, it transpires that his abusin’ the booze might have been the cause for the problems in the first place…
Along with Washington, now comes the news that Don Cheadle and Bruce Greenwood have both signed on for roles. Both are great – Cheadle was fantastic in the Guard and Greenwood is always good (especially as Captain Pike in Star Trek) so it looks like a pretty topnotch cast so far.
Check out the synopsis below – whilst the story might sound quite serious and sad in tone, the use of the words ‘redemption story’ suggest it might be a bit more uplifting.
No release date yet, but production should start soon enough – and no fear of Dead Eye Characters in this Zemeckis movie, thank God.
Written by John Gatins (“Dreamer: Inspired By a True Story,” “Real Steel”), FLIGHT tells the redemption story of “Whip” (Washington), a commercial airline pilot who pulls off a heroic feat of flying in a damaged plane, saving 98 lives on a flight carrying 106 people. While the world begs to embrace him as a true American Hero, the everyman struggles with this label as he is forced to hold up to the scrutiny of an investigation that brings into question his behavior the night before the doomed flight.
