There’s no doubt that Tinker Tailor Soldier spy has been a hit, both critically and commercially. It succeeded in topping the box office in the UK, most likely buoyed by the massive buzz surrounding the cast and Gary Oldman’s stellar performance. Now The Guardian are reporting that a sequel could be on the way….
Whilst it may be a spy movie, Tinker Tailor is hardly Mission Impossible, but Studio Canal believe they’re on to a winner with this and see a potential franchise in the making. And you can’t deny their logic – there’s definitely a renewed appetite for more adult franchises, such as David Fincher’s hugely anticipated Dragon Tattoo remake. In talking to The Guardian, Oldman quite rightly said that he’d only do it if director Tomas Alfredson returned, so it’s a safe bet to assume any sequel wouldn’t be a quick and easy cash-in. There are a number of books for the studio to choose from featuring Oldman’s Smiley character, with The Guardian suggesting an amalgamation of storylines being most likely.
What do you think about a sequel? Do you want to see more Smiley, or is Tinker Tailor a film that deserves to stand on it’s own? I certainly thought it was brilliant, so would be interested to see what could come from a continuation of the spy series…
