Real Steel star Hugh Jackman recently sat down with MTV to discuss the long-awaited The Wolverine. In the interview, Jackman speaks openly about the possibility of seeing an R-Rated version of the character. He says, "James Mangold and I talked about (an R-Rated version) and we're like, 'Look, let's not put it off the table'. There's even talk about us doing two versions, as in finding a way to do both while you shoot it, which could be really cool. But you need a really good excuse to exclude those fans". Those fans he speaks of are his younger audience. He admits that it would be saddening to stop them from seeing the character's latest adventure. He also later likens Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight to The Wolverine in tone. So it's apparent the pair are trying to strike a nice balance between dark and gritty but still adhering to censor regulations.
So could we see an R-Rated version of The Wolverine in theaters? Absolutely not. But could we see an unrated version (with blood & guts intact) on Blu-Ray? I'd say it's definitely a possibility.
