After months of rumours and false starts it looks like the film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed is finally on its way. Variety are reporting that Sony have entered final negotiations for rights to adapt and distribute the movie. Game developer Ubisoft have been offering the rights to the project to a variety of studios over the past month, with Sony looking to have won the bidding war.
Ubisoft announced in May that they were to create their own film department in order to maintain more control over their own IPs. It was an understandable decision, having had their fingers burned on a number of projects, including a film adaptation of hit game Splinter Cell that has been stuck in development hell for years.
Earlier this year, Jean de Rivieres, Ubisoft's senior Vice President of international marketing and distribution, said "Our strategy is not to diversify but to bolster the appeal of our franchises -- that's why we want to make sure our films will reflect the brands accurately and consolidate our fan base while expanding beyond the games' primary target audience."
Ubisoft’s Jean-Julian Baronnet was quoted as saying, "We want to keep ownership, retain control over the film content, and we're open to work with studios on the development of our projects, and eventually collaborate on the pre-casting, pre-budget and script."
Sony is also believed to be developing adaptations of the popular Uncharted and inFAMOUS franchises.
