For most, the name ‘Madonna’ is very rarely associated with movies. Whilst she’s still one of the most successful popstars of all time, her numerous forays into cinema have ranged from successful (Evita) to almost universally panned (Swept Away). At one point she even said that she’d never act again, but clearly her desire to break into film hasn’t gone away as she’s now finished her first feature film, W.E.
Written by Madonna herself and Alex Keshishian, W.E. tells the story of Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), the American divorcee who caused King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy) to abdicate the throne in order to marry her. Abbie Cornish plays Wally Winthrop, a young girl in 1998 who becomes obsessed with the royal couple and their romance.
The film premiered at Venice this year to decidedly mixed reviews, but now a full trailer has premiered so you can take a look for yourself! The film is slated for release in December in the US, although rumours abound that the Weinstein Company may push the release into 2012.
