I think for anyone it would be hard enough to imagine the sci-fi movie scene without George Lucas. It's anyone's bet what would have become of the sci-fi genre without his involvement. In a lengthy interview with the New York Times it looks like he is thinking about pulling the reigns in.
"I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff," he says. Since his newest project Red Tails is nearing the end he is looking to tie things up. In recent times he has fought hard for this WW11 film to be brought to the screen which was turned down by a great deal of studios and ended up having to finance himself.
Basically he sums up in saying that he is aware of all the negativity surrounding the constant remastering and remakes of the original Star Wars movies. He says, "Why would I make any more [Star Wars movies] when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?" So he seems out on the idea of future Star Wars are in the picture. However he doesn't close the door on the possibility of the future of the Indiana Jones franchise.
Lucas see's his future in movies as "esoteric and screened mostly in art-houses" and leaves a note that he will be doing mostly experimental projects. Hopefully there will be awhile to go before you rush to see the new George Lucas epic in your local art house show!
