Steven Spielberg is on the publicity rounds for Warhorse, but also spoke about the 2013 release of Robopocalypse, which he’ll direct once Lincoln wraps.“It’s a movie about a global war between man and machine, I had a great time creating the future on “Minority Report”, and it’s a future that is coming true faster than any of us thought it would. “Robopocalypse” takes place in 15 or 20 years, so it’ll be another future we can relate to. It’s about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are. It’s not the newest theme, it’s been done throughout science fiction, but it’s a theme that becomes more relevant every year.”
The acknowledgement of it having been done before is quite refreshing, so with that in mind it’ll be interesting to see how Robopocalypse (which is based on a NY Times best selling book by Daniel H.Wilson) will turn out!
The plot of the book goes like this…
In the near future, an increasingly robot-reliant society faces extinction after a computer scientist accidentally unleashes a sentient artificial intelligence named Archos.
After failed attempts at AI, Archos becomes self aware and immediately takes steps to stop his destruction. By infecting all devices that are chip controlled (cars, elevators, robots, etc.), Archos begins a systematic attack on mankind.
Small bands of survivors find ways to circumvent the eradication. This is a story of those survivors in the months and days leading up to and following Archos' self-awareness.
The movie is being jointly financed by 20th Century Fox and Dreamworks, so either things are getting tough on the bank balances, or this is going be a gigantic movie!
