In March 2011, it emerged that one of the most beloved science-fiction movies of all time, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, was set for a reboot. In the weeks following the announcement, Scott himself signed on to direct the Alcon Entertainment/Warner Bros. financed picture.
Scott’s involvement aside, the plan was for a total revamp of the film which has had more cuts made to it than the Irish social welfare system. In August, in an interview for the LA Times, producer Andrew Kosove made it clear that Scott would be the only returning alumni, saying:
“In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott but if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting.”
It seems Mr. Kosove has either been telling a few fibs or things have changed substantially, as it has now been revealed, Via Twitch , that Harrison Ford has entered early talks with Ridley Scott to return to his iconic role of Rick Deckard.
“Early talks” in Hollywood don’t really mean anything. Actors are frequently linked to various parts, with nothing ever subsequently happening (see Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones… I know). Though many, including myself, may have sceptical reservations about the idea of a reboot, this development is an exciting step towards a new portrayal of a timeless classic.
Potential scheduling conflicts aside, the new Blade Runner project is set to be Scott’s next project following Prometheus, which is due for release on these shores on the 1st of June.
