George Lucas is doing some PR for the release of the 3D version of The Phantom Menace and has been speaking about the Han shot first controversy to The Hollywood Reporter. The Star Wars creator said “The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.”
So there! Take that fanboys!!! Personally, at this point, the argument that has raged for years has been blown out of all proportion. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve never really given it too much thought and if truth be told, is it really that big a deal? If anything, from the quote above, Lucas was obviously trying to keep the fans happy in some capacity. But as usual, the hardcore Star Wars fans, who obviously think they themselves created the saga, continuously rip Lucas a new one. For Christ sake, let it go at this point, and admire the man who has given all of us so many incredibly happy and joyful cinematic memories.
