Michael Fassbender is on a major wave at the moment and theres no sign of it breaking as the award winning Kerry man (we here on the emerald isle don’t care about the Austrian thing) is involved in a big screen adaptation of Cú Chulainn. Now for those of you not fluent in Gaelic you pronounce that Coo Cullen. Fassbender is developing the movie alongside Ronan Bennett and the Shame star is expected to star as well.
Cú Chulainn is a pretty bad ass character from Irish mythology and there is a fantastic selection of tales to draw from him. His death in particular is quite impressive involving him breaking a ban on eating dog meat and getting weakened before a grand finale involving 3 magical spears. The stories are brilliant and I reckon it will all hang on the look and pacing of the movie. Gritty and fast is what I’d like to see, along the lines of 300, but not as stylised. I’m thinking a combination of Valhalla Rising and Braveheart with sprinklings of the aforementioned 300.
