I haven't really enjoyed anything from the director since Signs but I still watch every movie M. Night Shyamalan puts out hoping he brings the skill and fun he showed with The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and the aforementioned Mel Gibson versus Aliens flick. Now he is hard at work on the post-apocalyptic sci fi project After Earth, originally called 1000 A.E., which many people hope to be a return to form for the director. Photos of the project have been released on his twitter feed before, mainly behind the scenes images, but nothing to give a sense of the tone and style of the movie. But now we get that with a new photo showing actor Jaden Smith in a futuristic onesie.
The story follows a son (Smith) who has to protect his father (Will Smith, so not much acting required there) from unforeseen dangers when their space ship crash lands on Earth, 1000 years after it was made uninhabitable. Lets hope the dangers don't include killer trees, because The Happening showed us shrubbery is not scary.
The script, written by Shyamalan, has received a polish from script writer Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana). This is major since all of Shyamalan's other movies have credited him solely as writer.
After Earth is planned to have a June 2013 release date.
