Talking about his 2010 biography of professional boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward, Mark Wahlberg has expressed an interest in making a sequel to The Fighter, focusing on a trilogy fights Ward had with Aturo Gatti.
The original film, which won Oscars for co-stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, followed former champion Ward and his relationship with drug addicted brother Dickie as he attempts a comeback. Wahlberg has said it shouldn't be considered a sequel, as it focus on the relationship between Ward and Gatti. "They became very close... and still went in the ring to try to kill each other," the actor said, "It's not really a follow-up to The Fighter.... much more of a study of Micky Ward and his relationship that formed from that first fight with Gatti." He also added that Baltasar Kormakur, director of his upcoming Contraband, is his choice of director for the proposed follow up.
