Joss Wheon and drew Goddard's genre bending horror The Cabin In The woods has been a long time coming. Production finished in 2009, with a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth among it's cast, but due to MGM, the holders of the distribution rights, going bankrupt, the movies release was in jeopardy. Thankfully deals were made, and the movie is finally released in April.
Co-written by Whedon and Goddard, with the latter also taking directing duties, the movie is an attempt to re-vitalise the horror genre, which the two feel has devolved since the introduction of "torture porn", so prevalent in movies such as Saw and Hostel. The Cabin In The Woods takes the tried and trusted horror trope of a group of teens alone in an isolated cabin, and turns everything on it's head, bringing in many recognizable aspects of the horror genre and having fun with them. It's already being called this generation's Scream, and is being described as nothing we've ever seen before, with the official synopsis reading as follows:
Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen.
If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard comes "The Cabin in the Woods," a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out.
I'm hoping all the hype is accurate for this one, and that the wait was worth it.
