Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to get new origin

Following on from the announcement of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getting a Christmas Day 2013 release date, producer Michael Bay has revealed new details on the project, specifically on changes to the heroes origins which will no doubt get fans talking. Speaking on Stuff We Like, the producer talked about  making the franchise popular again, saying:

"When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."


So they are now aliens, no longer ordinary turtles exposed to a powerful mutagenic substance? Doesn't this really take away from everything the property is about? No doubt more details will be revealed as more elements of this project come together.
