With the upcoming release of THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED in the US, IRELAND, UK, and elsewhere in 2012, Film Shelf Entertainment wanted to propose a retrospective of the iconic rockers of modern‐day cinema that audiences worldwide have come to know and love based off the music icons we’ve all followed over the decades.
We've shortlisted a group of recent characters and their respective films from AARON JOHNSON as a young John Lennon in NOWHERE BOY to MICHAEL PITT as a Kurt Cobain‐inspired rocker in LAST DAYS and up to Buddy Holly‐inspired THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED; what do these rockers and their actor counterparts have in common to represent an icon (or an icon‐in‐the‐making)?
- Guitar playing? Check.
- Killer hair? Check.
- Their ability to croon their way out of anything? Double check.
Below you'll find a compilation of some of the most memorable rockers brought to the modern screen in this retrospective:
AARON JOHNSON as a young John Lennon in NOWHERE BOY (2009)
MICHAEL PITT as Kurt Cobain‐inspired rocker Blake in LAST DAYS (2005)
JOAQUIN PHOENIX as Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE (2005)
SAM RILEY as Ian Curtis in CONTROL (2007)
CATE BLANCHETT (et al.) as reinterpretations of Bob Dylan in I’M NOT THERE. (2007)
LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS as Ritchie Valens in LA BAMBA (1987)
GAREY BUSEY as a true‐to‐form Buddy Holly in THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY (1978)
GUY KENT as a modern‐day Buddy Holly in THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED
THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED is an inventive bio‐pic that explores the pathos of rock legend
Buddy Holly in a surreal, modern‐day setting. Starring newcomers Guy Kent as the re‐imagined Holly and Paige Segal as his fictional muse Peggy Sue, the film also stars 5‐time EMMY® nominee Harold Gould.
