It seems that everyone who loves their movies, except Roger Ebert, loved the controversial, action-packed Kick Ass when it was released over two years ago. Vic gave it one of our first 5-star reviews on its release and now, with a new writer-director at the helm, it’s set to get a sequel.
Collider sat down with Aaron Johnson who’s set to return as the main character, Dave Lizewski; the socially-inept comic book fan, turned socially-protective avenger Kick-Ass when the sequel; “Balls to the Wall” (I hope that’s a working title) arrives on our screens in the distant future.
When asked bout the sequel, Johnson had the following to say:
“It’s pretty much set to go, this Fall. I think now Chloe [Grace Moretz] and Chris [Mintz-Plasse] are on board. I’m certainly set up to do it. Jeff Wadlow is to direct. Yeah, I think it’s going to happen… Matthew Vaughn has got his name all over this one, as well. The only way he was ever going to make a sequel was if it could be anywhere close to the first one, and keep that class and that quality, and just maintain something original and new and refreshing. And this script delivers all of that, right now. I’m excited to get back in the suit.”
When asked about the film’s rating, Johnson confirmed it would be an R, adding “It keeps the standard, from the first film.”
As much as I am looking forward to seeing in what direction the Kick-Ass universe is taken, there is a looming spectre that hangs over this production, the audience’s inflated expectations. I, like most, loved the first instalment which was masterfully tempered by director Matthew Vaughn, working from a fantastic Jane Goldman script. Given that the sequel is being written and directed by the same man who gave us Never Back Down, I’m going to reserve my judgement until we actually get to see the finished product. However, with a stellar cast returning, with Vaughn on producing duties and a commitment to remaining an R-rated franchise it might just be another gem.
