The mind boggling success of the Resident Evil franchise notwithstanding, movies based on video games usually don't fare that well. So how about a game that is basically an interactive movie? Announced during the 25th anniversary celebration of Konami's Metal Gear, the mega popular game franchise will be getting the big screen treatment. Made in association with Columbia Pictures, the movie will be produced by Avi Arad, who has had a hand in producing just about every movie based on a Marvel Comics property. As he puts it, "For many years, I fought to bring comics to theaters - and video games are the comics of today."
Proclaiming it's game style as 'Tactical Espionage Action', the first Metal Gear game debuted in 1987, and put players in control of Solid Snake, a member of special operations unit FOXHOUND, tasked with finding a stolen super weapon 'Metal Gear', a gigantic mech with nuclear capabilities. Several sequels followed, but the franchise really took off with the release of Metal Gear Solid in 1998, spawning two sequels, a prequel, and an unfathomable number of spin offs. Pioneering the stealth gaming genre, the game also mixed a deep and twist laden story with impressive cinematics. It also heavily referenced many classic movies of the action genre (at one point Snake refers to himself as Plissken, a nod to Escape From New York). With the right people in place, this movie could be all sorts of mind blowing.
There is no word on will be involved as of yet, but no doubt legions of fans (with me leading them) will not be happy if David Hayter, writer of Watchmen and X-Men, and voice of Solid Snake since 1998, isn't involved.
