Guardians Of The Galaxy close to getting a director

The only movie not to be a sequel in Marvel Studio's 'Phase 2', Guardians Of The Galaxy is close to getting a director, with Marvel executives in talks with James Gunn, the man behind Super and Slither, to take the reins of the team of intergalactic heroes. He does seems like an odd choice, his previous movies not fitting in with what Marvel has put out (though he did write the first Scooby Doo movie), and I find it hilarious that Disney will release a movie by a man who made his name working with the infamous Troma Studios, who count The Toxic Avenger and Surf Nazis Must Die among their many releases. But the studio has made some odd choices with directors in the past. Kennath Branagh threw many people for a loop when he was announced on Thor, and Welcome To Collinswood directors Anthony and Joe Russo are helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier (to my mind, the closest they have come to action has been the undeniably brilliant paintball two-parter in t.v's Community). As for Gunn, marvel have said they like the director's ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror. While I don't know about horror, action and comedy is something the Guardians Of the Galaxy comics have shed loads of (as well as been extremely smart and inventive), and considering his previous efforts, Gunn is a fantastic choice. Here's hoping he signs on the dotted line.

While not much is known about the story at this stage, a short synopsis has been released, with the plot supposedly concerning "a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants". To me, this promises a good old fashioned space adventure. Marvel's answer to Star Wars, maybe? As always, we here at The Movie Bit will keep you updated as soon as news breaks.
