Warner Brothers have decided not to go ahead with a proposed adaptation of the Stephen King classic, The Dark Tower to the big screen. The project was thought to have included three movies, supplemented with a possible T.V spin-off. Ron Howard was the man who was interested in leading the now defunct project. A new fresh approach to the script was to be penned by Oscar winner Akiva, King and Brian Grazer were to produce alongside Goldsman.
Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem were both rumoured to be attached at one point. The move comes as a surprise given the global popularity of King’s novels, such projects as The Shawshank Redemption and The Shining remain today classics that will endure for generations. It is also surprising given that after Harry Potter and Batman there is a void there for something new. Despite the fact that Stephen King is one of the most prolific novelists and many of his works have been adapted for both TV and cinema, Warner Brothers are not the first to give him the thumbs down. Word is that The Dark Tower was already offered to NBC/Universal but the studio didn’t fancy it as the scale of the project was deemed too large. Fans of King, don’t despair just yet, it has been reported that the studio behind this year’s comedy hit Ted, Media Rights Capital (MRC) are considering taking on the project.
