While the last attempt, way back in 1997, to update the classic Godzilla franchise and bring it to a wider audience failed miserably, Warners Bros. and Legendary Pictures latest stab at it seems, at the moment, to be going in the right direction. Director Gareth Edwards (who impressed with Monsters, his directorial debut which featured giant squid like aliens taking over Mexico) has said he wants to get back to the epic and gritty nature of the original Japanese movies. A teaser trailer shown at this years Comic-Con seemed to back him up, with viewers praising the depiction of the monster, a homage to it's classic look from 1954, and use of the original movies sound effects, mainly it's roar.
Now a release date has been given for the reboot, May 16th 2014, putting it firmly in Summer blockbuster territory. And, surprising no one, the movie will be presented in 3D, but no word as of yet if it will be shot specifically for the format, or shot for 2D and converted.
