The first of the horror/thriller movies that will lead up to halloween has hit the big screen and its an all to familiar and bland affair. This film really has nothing to offer at all and I mean that! Cheap lame jump scares, a script that made not a single character bearable and the acting.... My god the acting....
Newly divorced Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) move to the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. The catch, the next door neighbours were killed by their daughter four years previously and the son, Ryan (Max Thieriot) now lives by himself in the house. But soon after Elissa befriends Ryan she soon learns that the town has a dark secret looming over it.
It's been awhile for me since I last saw a horror movie that I really loved, even enjoyed would be nice... So as I sat down to watch this I really wanted to enjoy it, but from the get go I couldn't. As soon as the actors began speaking I knew where it was going and it was no where good. Elissa is meant to be the person we are meant to care about, but whenever she talks to Ryan it only seems to be about how his parents were killed. Its almost like she thinks he has forgotten, so just in case she brings it up again and again. Who would even talk like that!? Elissa's mother Sarah is a no better character, she's just this annoying over protective mother that we see in an endless supply of these movies. Now lets talk about Ryan.... With his dead eyes and blank face, nothing is going on with him at all. He is just so hugely forgettable as characters go I can't even remember him talking about anything else other then is dead parents. Maybe if Elissa asked him something else it would have helped.
All in all this is just the same old pointless jump scare movie that we have all seen before. I had hoped that 'Cabin in the Woods' would show film makers all the cliche slasher movie thing we have seen a hundred times before and maybe just maybe we would get some new breed of slasher horror. Seems my hopes were a little to high...
Do yourself a favor and skip this one. We have more horrors coming in soon, maybe one will actually scare us.
