Halloween is slowly drawing upon us, the only time of year where it's acceptable, even encouraged, to watch violent, gore soaked movies. In honour of that fine tradition, I've compiled a list of what I think are the best deaths in the long and noble history of horror movies. Not for the faint of heart and NSFW.
Death by Bus – Final Destination
The Final Destination series is known for it's elaborate and slow building death scenes, so when death cheating teen Terry is dispatched out of nowhere by a speeding bus in the first installment, it not only took the audience completely by surprise, but also provided a stand out scene that the sequels have yet to top.
Death by wood chipper – Tucker And Dale Versus Evil
Mixing in a healthy amount of laughs with it's gore, Tucker and Dale versus Evil turned the tired old “murderous hillbilly” cliche on it's head, with the usual array of teens dispatched in an array of fatal accidents while our yokel heroes look on in confusion. It also features the best wood chipper scene since Fargo, with a killer (excuse the pun) last line.
Death by glass door – Thirteen Ghosts
Not the most well received of films, Thirteen Ghost is actually alot of insane fun, with some great, gruesome designs on the ghosts, and a fantastic death scene courtesy of actor JR Bourne and a pair of sliding glass doors. If this was an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, it would have ended with the line, “he had to split”.
Death by garage door – Scream
The Scream series has its fair share of iconic death scenes, but Tatum's death in the first installment is by far my favorite. I will admit that the end caught me by surprise, I expected her to escape the garage only to gutted by the killer outside, and I haven't looked at automatic garage doors the same way ever since.
Death by bed – Nightmare On Elm Street
Before the zany characters we love and expect from Johnny Depp, the actor was probably best known for this scene form A Nightmare on Elm Street. Quite an inventive way of using a bed, this scene also gave cinema it's largest ever blood geyser.
There's my list of my favorite ways characters have been dispatched over the years, but death scenes are really like a box of chocolates, everybody has their favorite. So sound off below with yours.
