While I do enjoy the current batch of gross out teen comedies, such as Project X, Superbad, and the movie that started the craze, American Pie, I do miss the gentler takes on the genre from the 80's, such as Say Anything and anything from John Hughes, which chose humour and likeable characters over seeing someone get drenched in bodily fluid. So I'm really glad to see a return to this with The First Time.
Telling the story of two high school students who meet and fall in love over the course of a weekend, the movie comes from director Jon Kasdan, son of Lawrence, writer of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, The Bodyguard and director of Silverado and The Big Chill, and brother to Bad Teacher and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story director Jake. So, talented family.
The movie is getting a limited release in the U.S. this month, while there is no word on when it is coming over to this side of the pond. Hopefully this will change soon, as judging by the trailer, this movie deserves to be seen.
Released: 19th October 2013 (U.S.)/ ? (U.K./IRL)
