So you directed one of the highest grossing movies of the year (and all time), how do you follow that up? Well, if you're Joss Whedon, with an adaption of a Shakespeare play. Made in your house. With your friends. Using the original text. In black and white.
Shot during a 12 day break from The Avengers, Much Ado About Nothing is a contemporary spin on the classic Shakespearean comedy, that brings together many actors Whedon has worked with on his many television and film projects in the past, including Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Amy Acker (The Cabin In The Woods), Franz Kranz (The Cabin In The Woods), and Clark Gregg (The Avengers). The film premiered at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, with no word of a wider release. But now, finally, it has been given a release of June 7th 2013 for general consumption. This puts it in line for some prime Summer real estate, and is no doubt been pushed as counter programming for those sick of big budget blockbusters.
Since The Avengers, Whedon's name carries a lot of weight, and this should do well. But for those Whedon fans (myself included) who want this film to be successful, don't wait for DVD like we always do. Go see it in the cinema. Then buy it on DVD.
