The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey set a new December opening weekend record, pulling in nearly $85 million over the weekend. The 3D version of Peter Jackson’s movie accounted for nearly half of all ticket sales and IMAX showings accounted for nearly 12 percent. Combine this with $138,200,000 from the Foreign box office (us lot over here) and The Hobbit has pulled in over $222 million worldwide. With an estimated budget of $180 million, it’s turning into the green (in more ways than one) and it’s probably a safe bet to say this will pull in close to $400 million over the holidays with repeat viewings a-plenty as well as many folks breaking out of their house away from turkeys, stuffing and sherry swilling grannies.
