What happens when you put a big bunch of movie stars into a movie? Like a really big bunch of movie stars? Try Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Seth MacFarlane, Anna Faris, Kieran Culkin, Emma Stone, Jack McBrayer, Richard Gere, Johnny Knoxville, Sean Willam Scott, Gerard Butler, Uma Thurman, Jason Sudeikis…..you get the drift. This is a huge cast. So what kind of movie would such a large cast sign up for? Oh you know, one that involves incest, shitting all over one another and masturbating cats. The kinda stuff that you normally look at online; at 3am, and feel guilty about it afterwards. And that leads us onto our plot.
A bunch of kids search the deepest and darkest parts of the internet for Movie 43, which happens to be the most banned movie in the world. On their journey through the depths of cyberspace they stumble across a selection of short films, which is where the shit, incest, masturbation and a whole plethora of other crazy stuff unfolds. It’s these short films where the gags, gross out moments (many which you will never be able to unsee) and masturbating cats bring the laughs….albeit on occasion.
A number of these shorts are genuinely hilarious. Unfortunately, Movie 43 blows its load rather quickly and your left struggling with a couple of boring shorts and pointless cutbacks the to ‘net searching kids. I’d imagine alot of the stars on show here are well out of their comfort zone and to his immense credit, Hugh Jackman has some pair of balls on him to pull off his part! You can’t really fault any of the performances here as they do raise a giggle from time to time and the occasional choke on the popcorn moments.
With so much on offer here balance and consistency were going to be the problems. While the balance is pretty spot on, everybody gets a fair crack of the whip and your never left wanting more (a good thing in this case) from anybody, the consistency of the short films is a big problem. Movie 43 sets you up fairly brilliantly and you wait with great anticipation to see how the next short film will out do the next. And while some do lots of out-doing, many leave alot to be desired and you’ll find yourself looking at your watch, wondering when the hilarity will return to the screen.
All that said, Movie 43 has a cast that will be a huge draw especially considering some of the scenes they’re involved in. It’s just a shame that it’s not consistent enough with the laughs. Overall though, leave your brain well and truly at home, in a jar in the fridge, as this is stupid beyond belief. Still though, it has just enough to keep you on your seat and has a number of memorable scenes. In any case, Hugh Jackman’s scene is worth the price of admission alone!
