John Williams has composed iconic score after iconic score, but none bigger than Star Wars. And now with some Star Wars sequels on the cards (first one arriving in 2015, directed by J.J. Abrams) John Williams has been speaking about said sequels. The following comes from a concert that Williams was conducting and comes to light via a poster on the John Williams Fan Network
“We’re about to play Star Wars [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George…[more cheers].”
Make of that what you want, obviously John isn’t aware that George is in the back seat far, far away. Maybe he is aware, I don’t know. But what about J.J. Abrams working with Michael Giacchino nearly exclusively. Giacchino is a fantastic composer with some great scores under his belt including Super 8, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Up to name but three. But with a piece of music as iconic as Star Wars, can you really change that? Hypothetically speaking, Giacchino could do his own version of Williams score and I’m sure it’d sound fantastic, but this is something that could really have quite the implications.
The Star Wars score is as memorable as the movies themselves, and especially considering this is continuation from Jedi, to do anything else would be crazy in my book. Maybe on the stand alone movies featuring Han Solo and so on, there’s room for Giacchino to make his mark. With the future holding so many Star Wars possibilities, one wonders will things get too diluted and over saturated?
What do you think about who should score Episode VII? Comments in the comments section below please :)
