Joss Whedon at The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival

SHARE:

Much Ado About Nothing had it’s European premiere on Saturday in the Savoy on O Connell Street. Joss Whedon was in attendance and accepted the Volta award before the curtain went up, on his take on all things Shakespeare. Accepting the Volta award; full of humour, wit and humility Whedon walked on to a rapturous ovation and opened by saying “Thank you for reading from the great poet IMDB” in reference to a lengthy introduction which incorporated as much Whedon productions and writings as possible.  The Avengers director, with award in hand, continued by saying “Contrary to popular belief, I didn’t come here just cos I was getting one of these”. He also spoke briefly about Much Ado and finished by saying “I’m really excited about this movie and may throw up”

Post screening, the director made his way once more to the front of a sold out Savoy cinema and along with John Maguire from The Sunday Business Post, held a Q&A session for around 15 minutes. Again, full of humour, humility and oodles of wit Whedon not only entertained by was absolutely inspiring. He spoke at length about his take on Much Ado About Nothing, explaining it was shot in his house and that he changed a few words around as well, including replacing the word “Jew” with “fool” and continued on with a great line stating “So additional dialogue by Joss Whedon”.

When asked for some hints, tips and a bit of insight when it comes to writing, Whedon replied “I am literally the worst person in the world to answer that question”. He did go on though to talk about his father and grandfather who of course wrote widely for TV. And of course there was a question about the Avengers sequel to which Whedon is promising “Death, Death and more Death” and also said that while he can’t make it bigger, he can make it better. A huge standing ovation seem to blow Whedon away as the crowd stayed on its feet until he left.

All in all, it was a rather fantastic Q&A with Joss Whedon receiving a being on hilarious top form and being nothing but an inspiration.
We shot a brief bit of video of Joss accepting the Volta award. You can check that out below!
