Of John Carpenter's most well known films, Halloween, Assault On Precinct 13, The Thing, And Escape From New York, his vision of a dystopian future where Manhattan had being turned into a maximum security prison has so far staved off any attempt of a remake. New Line were attempting a remake a few years back, with The Crazies director Breck Eisner at the helm, but they let the rights lapse. Now, the project has been resurrected with The Matrix producer Joel Silver's Silver Pictures and Studio Canal (who have teamed up already for Liam Neeson's Unknown and Non-Stop) planning an origin story and eventual trilogy for the movie's anti-hero Snake Plissken, whose infiltration of said prison island formed the entire basis of the movie. Silver has promised a new take on the material, so this lands the project firmly in reboot territory.
There is no word on writer or director yet, but a few names have already being thrown about to fill Kurt Russel's boots as Snake. Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner, and Tom Hardy were all considered when the movie was with New Line, and consider Silver Pictures and Studio Canal have worked with Liam Neeson in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if his name will be popped into the hat as well.
