Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead remake premiered over the weekend at the SXSW film festival to rave reviews, promising quite a gore filled treat when the movie is released in April. Really, apparently some critics can't understand how the movie got an R rating with how shockingly graphic it is (according to the films producer Rob Tapert it was a real fight to secure the rating). So, for all horror fans, this is one to mark in your calendars. And, all going as planned, we won't see Alvarez's vision of The Evil Dead end here.
Speaking to the audience after the screening, Alvarez revealed that he and screen writer Rodo Sayagues have begun work on a sequel, with Bruce Campbell, star of the original movies and another of the remake's producers (the originals director Sam Raimi makes three), adding that the new movie is envisioned as the first part of a planned trilogy, seen as completely standalone and separate from the original trilogy. To me, this suggests the sequel will further step away from the original movies (the remake has made some quite big changes to the original story), offering a fresh take on the classic franchise.
